We’ve stayed here twice now, and Itsuka, Mae, Ken and the team are the main reason we love it so much. Nozawa Onsen is a beautiful part of Japan, and the people are lovely too. The hotel is great, and the degustations are always a fun way to try local foods. The cafe and jam factory make delicious handmade ice cream, with new flavours every day, like soy sauce, fuji apple and buckwheat, though not all together 😂 Their jams are out of this world. Breakfast is another daily food delight, and guests can book the private onsen and negative ion bath. We’ll be back. The hospitality at Haus St Anton is second to none.

We came to Nozawa Onsen while travelling around Japan for the ultimate snowboard ride. Since my mates had already experienced St Anton’s hospitality, they’d booked us dinner before our late arrival. Nine eager lads were greeted warmly, our snowboard bags went straight into the downstairs dry room, and after getting our keys we were seated in no time for a birthday dinner to remember. Chef Ken’s menu unfolded like a concerto, with one refined course after another featuring local and seasonal produce. Fresh farm-to-table vegetables, black rice porridge with flounder, shinshu salmon and salt-crust roasted lotus root all showed Japanese culture and culinary passion. Wine and Saki pairings brought out each mouthful even more. Chef Ken, Shin, Fuga, Natsu, Yukimi and Ryoka made sure the night, and my birthday, would stay in our hearts and on our palettes. If you’re in Nozawa and want something special, put St Anton on your bucket list.

The staff were really friendly, and the hotel felt modern without costing too much. For value compared with other places around here, I think it’s the best. The staff spoke English very confidently and proficiently. Breakfast was Western-style and delicious. The bread and jam selection stood out, and even though I don’t usually drink coffee, I loved theirs. Guests also get a free drink at the attached coffee shop, 30% off rental gear at the rental store, and help sorting out a ski lift card. I’d recommend staying here if you get the chance.

What stood out most was the family-run feel. The owners were always around, the staff were helpful with everything, and we felt completely looked after. It was our first visit, and we’ve already rebooked for next year. The location is ideal, close to the Yu-road moving walkway up to Hikage slopes. Rooms were tidy, and the private onsen downstairs came in handy after skiing. There are plenty of nearby places to eat and food shops. The in-house cafe and restaurant covered breakfast, afternoon Allpress coffee and dinner one night.

This family-run hotel is right in the middle of town, and the family will go out of their way to help. The rooms are comfortable, in Japanese style with a touch of Europe, and the mattresses and pillows are great. There’s a private onsen, laundry and a drying room for gear. One of the family worked at a Michelin starred restaurant in Austria and brought that experience back. Absolutely fantastic place.
