Pension Rapport

There was a large manga collection, which was a pleasant surprise, and the dog was friendly and cute. The owner didn’t seem especially good at communicating, though. The website showed a lovely wife, but I never got to see her. The white rice was tasty, as were the side dishes, which were normal-good. There was only about four and a half small bowls of rice for three people, though. I don’t think that would be nearly enough for a family of five, especially with a growing elementary school child. The place seems proud of its food. Does that mean nearby guesthouses serve mediocre food? I don’t think so. It said people whose children eat a lot should book the adult course, but...? The room’s unit bathroom seemed unused, but there was hair from the previous guest on the wall and mold. On the other hand, the 24-hour heated family bath was nice. Pensions often reflect the owner's personality, so next time I think I'll try another one nearby. This is only my personal opinion, and I don’t feel particularly compelled to return. I don’t know about other pensions, but it seems small children aren’t allowed here.

We stayed during ski season. Our family are all small eaters, so we planned to leave meals and bedding off the bill for our 2-year-old. The parent who made the booking accidentally left the child off the guest count. That was our mistake, but at mealtime the pension owner told us, in an overly polite way, “We didn’t ask how many children. We don’t accept young children.” His fake smile felt intimidating. I also couldn’t tell from the booking site that young children weren’t accepted, and I ended up feeling bad. We paid 4,600 yen per night for our 2-year-old, even though there was no food or bedding. This pension may be comfortable for children of elementary school age and older.

The food is delicious, with both the fish and meat tasting good. The cheese chicken cutlet (?) in tomato sauce, layered like a mille-feuille, was especially exquisite. I wonder if they grow the basil on the wooden deck? The rooms are small, as you’d expect at a pension. If you just need somewhere to sleep, I recommend it.

The family bath was really relaxing, and we were very pleased with the thoughtfully laid out guesthouse and the delicious homemade food. We stayed one night, and would like to come back. Thank you, Lapo Papa and Lapo Mama!
