Ooarai Seaside Hotel

The ocean-facing onsen was fantastic, and the hotel is close enough to the shrine for a quick 1-2 minute walk to catch the sunrise. Breakfast was good too, though dinner was the real feast, especially the monkfish hotpot. The portions are so big you might want to skip lunch. We went for one night with the Garupan Support Plan, which included towels, badges, a tank-shaped cake, and a room decorated with Garupan items. We hadn't expected much when we booked, but had a wonderful stay. The staff were patient and professional even though most didn't speak English, so a translation app may come in handy. We'd happily return.

The staff were really nice, and both the location and food were good. I couldn't finish my meal, so if you have a big appetite, the generous portions should be good value.

Our Japanese-style room had spectacular views. While we were at the buffet dinner, the staff made up the mattresses for us. The hotel is well maintained, especially considering its age. During our stay, guests could also watch a special angler fish cutting show for free.

While I was there, I came across a Soviet KV-2 lying on its side. Its Hammer and Sickle emblem was made out of school supplies. It looked as if it had come from the sea, which made the whole thing feel pretty surreal.
