Hotel AreaOne Oita

The bathroom wasn’t very clean, so I had to wash it before showering. The supplied shampoo and body soap didn’t seem new and hadn’t been cleaned thoroughly. I could tell they’d been used before.

I found the rooms poorly maintained, and they still use a key rather than a swipe card. You also have to hand it in whenever you go out, which made me feel like a prisoner. Miss Sakamichi at the front desk seemed heartless and racist to me, and I felt the hotel was too. They wouldn’t let friends or family visit a room. I wanted to join my family in their room. At first she said it would only cost an extra 2000 yen, then changed it to 6800 yen for two nights for the extra person. Then she changed her mind again and said the booking couldn’t be changed or cancelled, and the extra person needed to make a separate booking. When someone needs to be added unexpectedly, I think it’s courteous to accommodate guests and make adjustments. Sakamichi and Hotel AreaOne Oita were incredibly inflexible and couldn’t even change a room. Sakamichi asked us to show our IDs, including passports, and recorded our temperatures. They didn’t do that to other Japanese people. It felt racist to me and like an invasion of privacy. By all means, do not stay here.

The staff were friendly and very helpful. The room was very small and old, though, and the air conditioner was really dirty. I wouldn’t recommend staying here if you have allergies. They should at least clean the air conditioner.

The room was simple and clean. Parking seemed very limited, and the lot was a short walk from the hotel.
