Onomichi Konoya

The room was spacious and comfortable, but the dirty kettle meant I couldn’t boil water or make tea. The other problems made this the worst and most expensive stay of my trip through Kobe, Okayama, Kagawa, and Hiroshima. The pet fee used to be 1,080 yen in an earlier review, but this time it was 5,500 yen for two pets. What is that fee even for when there are no pet amenities? The kettle was covered in black mold. We booked for two adults but received only one bath towel, towel, and toothbrush. The futon in the Japanese-style room was flat. After I bathed and drained the water, the toilet flooded, so I had to walk through the standing water. It was really unpleasant, and the bathroom area smelled awful. Breakfast was also the worst I had on this trip.

This pet-friendly place in Onomichi was better than the reviews suggested and seems to cover the basics well. There are no dinner options, though. As a catered inn, the food is high quality, and it’s a good fit for a budget-conscious trip. Wives can stay too.

The front desk service was poor, and the food was so bad I couldn’t eat it. The room was worse: there were used contact lenses stuck to the sink, mold on the bathroom curtain and around the toilet and sanitary box, a strangely warped and misaligned toilet bowl, and bedding that smelled unwashed. We were traveling with our dog, but the room was so disgusting that we paid and slept in the car instead. I can’t recommend this inn at all. I’m considering reporting it to the sanitation department. It’s astonishing they charge guests for this.

I’ve stayed here with my dog twice, and it’s still a very convenient place for guests with dogs. They don’t have dog-specific facilities or equipment, but the staff are kind and considerate toward my dog, and they can accommodate a fairly large medium-sized dog, which many pet-friendly lodgings won’t. The room is about the size of a regular business hotel, so it had what we needed, and the price was reasonable. The food was satisfying too. On my earlier stay, I planned to leave early and skip breakfast, so they made me rice balls. I really appreciated that. When I came for a third stay in November 2024, that service had stopped for hygiene reasons. The dinner menu also felt a little limited, though I understand prices have gone up. I’d stay here again.
