We had a big recreation room to ourselves, which was lovely, and it had a huge TV plus plenty of chairs and tables. You need that space, since there’s nowhere to sit in the room. The whole complex was quiet, very clean, and had a small kitchen with everything we needed. Free laundry was amazing, and there were plenty of toilets downstairs near the foyer, as well as showers. There’s also a place to lock your bags in the foyer, though the sign says storage is strictly limited to 24 hours. The station is very close, with a 7-11 and a few eateries nearby. Some rooms don’t have bathrooms because they’re near the foyer, which lowers the price. Check-in could be much simpler. You have to email your passport, do pre-check-in, then pose with your passport photo again and enter the check-in code when you arrive. The bathroom was tiny, only enough room for one person, but there was a cupboard for bags. We couldn’t figure out how to turn off the air conditioner with the remote, which was annoying. We couldn’t tell which button to press. The red button turned on the heat, but next time we just used the button on the unit itself.

We had booked for 12-14 March, and asked to cancel on 7 March, just one day after the free cancellation period had ended. My partner’s father had suddenly become terminally ill, so we needed to take an emergency flight home and would no longer be in Japan during the stay. We explained the situation and gave the hotel several days’ notice, but they refused any refund or flexibility. They made no effort to show understanding or make an exception, leaving us to pay the full cost for accommodation we couldn’t possibly use. The lack of empathy and inflexibility was extremely disappointing. In those circumstances, I expected much better customer service.

There’s a 7 Eleven right beside it, with Lawson about 100m away and Family Mart around 200m away. Osakako Station is roughly 100m from the hotel.

The room was a big part of my frustration: mine had just one outlet, tucked in a corner. And the noise outside was so bad that the earplugs I borrowed from reception didn’t help. I ended up trying to sleep with music playing through my own noise-canceling earphones. My parents live beside a main road, but it isn’t this loud, so I don’t think the area alone explains it. I chose the place for its low price, station access, nearby convenience store, laundry room, and shared kitchen. Those things are why I can just about give it two stars. But if you can pay a few thousand yen more, I’d seriously look elsewhere. I regret booking here so much that I think a love hotel would have been better. I would’ve given one star otherwise.

Getting around was the best part: the Expo was two stations away from the East Gate, and Universal Studios Japan was one station from Sakurajima by ferry. We used the hotel as our base for both, and the location worked really well. The room felt cramped for four adults. It had only two large single beds, and they were smaller than semi-doubles, which was a tight fit for our grown children. The check-in instructions said everyone didn’t have to be there, but staff wouldn’t proceed without a photo of everyone. I wish they’d been more flexible about that.
