Guest House YASUBE - Hostel

I booked this because it was one of the most affordable places to stay in Sapporo, and I’d be happy to come back. The owner is easygoing and friendly, speaks English, and even lent me an umbrella. There’s a locker beside the bed, and free toast each morning. The owner toasts it for you, then you can choose from two jams, peanut butter, or chocolate. A latte costs extra. One Chinese guest was annoying, leaving a huge snowboard on the kitchen floor and blocking everyone’s way.

A great option if you’re traveling on a limited budget. The owner changes the sheets for each guest, which matters most to me. There’s free toast in the morning, and coffee is only 300 yen. The park is a 5-8 minute walk away. Showers have hot water all day and night. There are three toilets, including one in the women’s room, which has eight bunk beds. The mattress and pillow are firm, which I like, and I slept really well. I’ll come back next time!

My favorite place I stayed in Japan, and the best coffee I’ve had here too. The relaxed atmosphere makes it easy to meet cool people, and the lattes are delicious and very reasonably priced. The neighborhood is quieter than central sapporo, but you can walk there or take the tram. nakajima park is just down the street, a lovely place to wander around and hang out with the crows. The owner was rude and impatient when I was just six minutes late checking out, threatening to charge me for another night and saying things like “I’m not your mother.” It felt really unprofessional. I can see that running a guesthouse and cafe alone is impressive, but this stay was disappointing and I won’t come back. At this relatively good price, I mainly wanted a comfortable bed so I could feel rested the next day, but I slept poorly during all three nights. I had to fold the pillow in half to support my head, and even at 164 cm, I had to sleep diagonally to avoid hitting my head on the very low shelf above the bunk. The room’s only toilet had no sink or soap dispenser, which is a serious hygiene issue.
