The staff were really sweet, and the place has a charming feel. The woodwork caught my eye, especially knowing the owner is a carpenter. My first night was in the female dorm, where I liked having a little extra space beside the bed. The mixed dorm was tighter, though it had plenty of thoughtful details too. The rooms didn't smell of smoke, but smoking is allowed in the bar downstairs and people also smoke in the hostel kitchen. After a fully booked night the air in the mixed dorm felt stuffy. Luckily, opening the window for five minutes was easy and helped air it out.

The annex was an unpleasant place to stay. There was a strong, nauseating chemical smell throughout the stairwell, perhaps mothballs? My room was small even by Japanese standards, not very clean, and had no kettle. The area also felt less than ideal and quite far from the centre. It was really expensive for what you get, so I'd look at other options.

Even arriving in the snow, I found the cutie lodge warm and cozy. I loved all the little corners during my stay, and the whole experience turned out better than I'd expected. Everything was lovely. Highly recommend!

Check-in was quick and easy, and the room was clean and comfortable. The staff were very friendly and spoke English well, so it was easy to communicate. A welcoming, budget-friendly hostel. I'd happily recommend it.

Sappolodge is a small hostel near Susukino, and you can walk to everything, which made getting around convenient. My bed pod had loads of space, probably the roomiest shared dorm I've stayed in. Showers are downstairs by the bar, and as far as I know there are only five lockers. That worked out fine for me: I got one and had no trouble showering downstairs. After long days touring, I always slept well. Thanks to SappoLodge for a great stay.
