The buffet, pool, ping pong, and karaoke with Grandma kept my kids happy, and we had a great time here. For families or a group of friends, it works really well. The rooms do have faults if you look closely, and the hot spring is just one large indoor bath and a nice outdoor one reached by a lot of stairs. It’s not a fancy place, but the price was extremely reasonable. I’d call it a solid three-star stay, though I gave it four because we enjoyed ourselves and got such a good price.

The resort feels a little old and past its prime, and there may be a slight cigarette smell. Still, the dinner was really good, and I’d choose the meal option since there aren’t many places to eat outside the resort. The forest scenery around the incredible seventh-floor Onsen, with its beautiful pine trees, is a lovely place to relax. If you’re new to Onsen, for the outdoor bath you don’t bring shampoo or soap. Just rinse by scooping water with the buckets provided. You can also ask for a free shuttle to Hamasaka Station, which saves around 4000¥ compared with a taxi.

The indoor onsen was clean, quiet, and lovely. The outdoor one, tucked away in the forest with a waterfall you can massage under, was the bomb. It’s well off the beaten path for most gaijin. This was the first stop on the 2014 Onsen tour, and you’d never guess the onsen was this nice.
