The food was great, and I slept surprisingly well, even though the room was an old-fashioned Japanese one with some wear and tear. There weren't enough power outlets. This was the first hotel where the humidifier and fan weren't already plugged in, and there were a few insects around. The onsen was pretty good. I came as part of a tour. It's okay, but might not suit everyone.

This could be a fun weekend for families with young kids. There isn't much to see nearby beyond the hotels and resorts, and the tourist options are pretty limited. Still, there's skiing in winter and an amusement park and outdoor activities in summer. Kirigamine is also a short, scenic drive away.

From the breakfast restaurant, we could look out at the lake just in front of the resort. The hot spring was nice, and dinner was great too. It's a huge, very old resort, which gave the place a slightly creepy feel.

This is the kind of place people seem to either love or hate. Some in my group liked its traditional character, while others thought it was run-down. Personally, I liked it. The onsen is open almost 24 hours, and the buffet had beer along with the snow crab-like dish. There was hardly any light pollution at night, so it would be a good spot for long-exposure photos. Too bad I hadn't brought my gear.

Out on the edge of town, with a tatami-style room. It gave me a nice taste of Japanese-style living.
