The bathroom is a tiny plastic cubicle, but the bedroom itself is huge and really nice. At first the place didn’t make a great impression, then dinner downstairs won me over with a classic, tasty 12-dish Japanese meal. They accept any dogs and have two big gardens for them, with trimming available soon if needed. The beach is close by for walks with your dogs.

The staff were cheerful and kind, and I felt comfortable during my stay. For such a good price, I was really happy with what the inn offered. I’ll definitely come back, and next time I’ll bring comfortable sandals for getting around. This isn’t the place to pick if you’re after stylish, luxurious facilities. It feels old and as though there isn’t much money going into upgrades. Still, my room was clean and spacious, with a roomy bathroom and a big ocean-facing window. The sunset was beautiful. There are two private baths. You can take your dog into the changing room. One bath is spacious and has a sauna, while the smaller one can still fit three people. There’s also a dog grooming room nearby with a washing and drying station and a hair dryer, handy if your dog gets dirty. The dog run currently has just one area, and it might be a bit small for large dogs. Meals are mainly fish. There may not be a wide enough selection for big eaters, but you can order extra, so check about that. Alcohol is available. Breakfast is something like a grilled fish set meal. The ocean is about a five-minute walk away. I went out around 6am to see the sunset. It was beautiful despite the clouds, and Mt. Fuji may be visible if it’s clear. The inn entrance was hard to spot, and I accidentally parked in the private lot just ahead, sorry. Look for the big Hotel Rainbow sign, then the smaller “Tateyama DIANA Entrance” sign right beside it. There’s a road going up next to Rainbow, and the parking lot is at the back. I included a photo to help.

The drive from Tokyo was a bit long, but the food was delicious and the staff were so friendly. After we checked out, someone came over to the dog run and played with our dog. We really appreciated that.

I’ve been coming here since it opened several decades ago, so I’ve watched it change over the years. The staff has always been a small group, and the manager has had to manage a lot on their own. Food is mainly fish, and they seem very mindful of keeping breakfast and dinner within guests’ budgets. There aren’t any female staff, even though some guests are women, so perhaps having some would be good. Is Tateyama unusual within the Caro Group? The tiled entrance and little dog run bring back memories of how lively the place was when it first opened. As a fan, I hope Tateyama keeps going. Prestige matters, and the rooms are cleaned thoroughly, so I feel at ease staying here. It’s a small inn, which makes it just right for traveling with a dog.

I come back once a year because the food has always been delicious. But on my recent stay, both dinner and breakfast were so disappointing that I was shocked. My family and I look forward to visiting Diana all year, and now I’m worried it might close. Since we travel with our dog, old facilities and other minor things don’t bother me. I just want the food to get back to how it was.
