Kudan Kaikan

The food trucks were the standout for me. On the day I visited, one had eastern food and the other western. The eastern truck was selling Singapore chicken rice, which I had to try as a Malaysian working in Singapore. I chose steamed chicken because they’d run out of roasted chicken, though I’d wanted the mixed option. I’d give the dish 4/5. I liked that they kept it simple and true to Singapore style. I hate when original dishes get “desecrated” to suit local tastes or marketing. I’d have liked greasier rice and more flavorful steamed chicken, but the bean sprouts and shredded carrot were a nice touch. Anyone in Tokyo who likes Singapore chicken rice should try it. Kudan Kaikan’s terrace is a simple open space in front of the historic building, which has cafes, offices, and event halls. There are benches, pergolas, and tables and chairs off to the side, with room for food trucks in the center. It overlooks the Imperial Palace moat. Mostly, it seems like a spot for nearby office workers to have lunch outdoors.

The staff were friendly and attentive, and I loved the clean atmosphere and terrace view. I noticed lunch was ¥1100 on the way out, which looked like a bargain. I’d go back. I had the light afternoon tea set with a strawberry theme, with strawberries in both the sweet and savory items. Some of the flavors clashed, so it wasn’t the best, but I still enjoyed it.

The B1 lounge is affordable while still feeling excellent. Set within the appealing Kudan Kaikan Terrace, this historic gem was carefully restored after the earthquake, and the lounge adds to the experience.
