Otsuka Station on the JR Yamanote line is very close, and it's just one stop to Ikebukuro. Otsuka itself has plenty of restaurants, cafes, and supermarkets, so finding food is easy. The room is spacious, even compared with some four-star hotels I've stayed in, and it was clean. I actually liked its older look, though the wallpaper and chairs are old and the wooden paneling and bed frames are visibly scratched. I think those details may have been left that way for charm, since the hotel has installed a new elevator and air conditioners. The room felt surprisingly modern despite its dated appearance, with a newly installed high-tech air conditioner that was great in the hot summer, and an electric toilet. The spring bed gave me a good night's sleep. For the low price, this place beats pricier three- or four-star hotels. The staff are friendly too.

The downsides: reception is on the second floor, so you have to take the stairs. On the plus side, Otsuka Station is about 250 m away. The room and private restroom were clean, though the restroom is small, around 1 m by 1.5 m. There's free Wi-Fi, a small fridge, a TV, and one canned or bottled drink each day.

The room is basic in size, but clean, and staff are kind. It's only about a two-minute walk from Otsuka Station. They clean the room every day, there's a laundry room on the first floor, and water is available daily at reception.

The staff were great. It's in a peaceful neighborhood, close to convenience stores and JR Ootsuka station on the Yamanote Line.
