The staff made a great impression on us. The front desk workers greeted us when we came in and said goodbye when we left, and when we tried to tip them, they politely declined and said that’s how things are in Japan. On arrival, a lovely man explained the hotel rules, including no smoking and no loud noise or parties, so we knew what to expect. Our room had four beds, a washer and dryer, a stove, a fridge, and a spacious bathroom. The hotel also provides in-suite laundry, free Wi-Fi, an equipped kitchen, and a bathtub, which made it feel well set up for a comfortable stay. Getting there was easy too. The website lists Yushima station, Okachimachi station, Ueno-Hurokoji station, and Ueno-Okachimachi station, so there are several ways to reach it. Even if I barely knew Tokyo’s train system and had to rely on maps, I think I could find the hotel without trouble. We stayed in central Tokyo for three days after finding section L on Google, and I’m glad we gave it a try. The section L Yushima-Ueno hotel deserves more than five stars, if that were possible.

We arrived from Narita on the Keisei Skyliner to Keisei-Ueno station, then walked about 0.8 km to Section-L. It meant we could avoid taking our luggage onto the subway. From the hotel, the Yushima subway entrance on the Chiyoda line is about half a block away, and Ueno-Hiroji on the Ginza line and Okachimachi on the Yamanote line are just a few blocks away. We used all three, depending on where we were headed. We were in Tokyo around Christmas and New Year’s, when places like Ueno, Ginza, Shinjuku, and Shibuya were extremely busy. I assume they’re always like that! We were glad to stay somewhere quieter, and would come back on a future trip. Our group of three adults spent eight nights in December in a clean, comfortable, quiet little apartment. It had three single beds, a small kitchen with a fridge, microwave, toaster oven, and two-burner induction stovetop, plus a bathroom with a combined washer and dryer. The building has a nice elevator and everything looked fairly new. Everyone at the front desk was friendly and very helpful, and spoke fluent English. Busy Ueno is a few blocks away, with a couple of good restaurants nearby, along with a FamilyMart and Yushima Tenjin Shrine. There’s also a Summit supermarket a couple of blocks away and a great food hall in the Matsuzakaya basement. Highly recommended.

The area was quiet for Tokyo, which made it easier to sleep and unwind. Trains and subways are very close, so it’s only a quick ride to other Tokyo cities. We had two adjoining rooms, with lots of space for three adults and two children, plus two toilets and two showers. Great room and location, highly recommended for families.

It’s a comfortable spot near Ueno station, with a train station only a block away and plenty of Izakaya within a few blocks. Even with central Ueno close by, the hotel feels quiet and away from the noise and bustle. The staff were incredibly friendly. I speak English as my first language and am also fluent in Japanese, and it was relaxing to have someone to chat with at the start and end of the day. They also helped us arrange forwarding our bags to a hotel in Osaka. Big thanks to Lance for guiding us through it all.

We were three people and found the room a decent size, though the beds were a little small but still fine. It had a stove, toaster, microwave, fridge, cooking and serving utensils, and a washing machine. The bathroom was relatively spacious compared with other hotels in Tokyo. With several train and subway stations within walking distance, the location was good too. Overall, a good value for the money.
