Hoppy Street has lots of izakayas, and we stumbled across this small spot there. The booths work best for groups of four or fewer. With all the hot plates going, it can get pretty warm inside, so we were glad to get a table by the door. We had Mentai Mochi Cheese Monja, Gyu Suji Negi Monja with added Kimchi and Baby Star crunchy ramen. Add the Baby Star right before eating if you want it to stay crunchy. We also tried Tonpeiyaki and Delux Monja. The Delux wasn’t that tasty to me, and if you like pork and seafood, I’d add some toppings to it. There are Japanese instructions on the wall for cooking Monja, and the staff are around to help if you get it wrong. It was a really fun place, and I’d visit again.

The dining room we were in was a bit cold, which was the one downside. Otherwise, it’s a nice place on Hoppy street. There’s an English menu, and the staff speak English very well. It doesn’t seem aimed just at tourists, though, everyone’s welcome and can enjoy the food.

I had both the monja and yakisoba, and they were fantastic. This small restaurant is on Hoppy-Dori in Asakusa, where plenty of visitors come through, but inside I mostly saw locals eating, drinking, and chatting. It has that small restaurant feel you might expect from a deep Japan kind of place. At peak times you may have to wait because there isn’t much space.

A cozy spot to drop in for a beer and some okonomiyaki. The food was delicious, and they have an English menu.

Yoshi was especially friendly and made lunch a lot of fun. The staff were great, and the menu and atmosphere felt truly authentic. The best okonomi yaki you can try, and a hidden gem in Tokyo.
