Ueno Station Hostel Oriental 1 - Caters to Men

I booked a week and stayed for 21 days, mostly because the place was so clean and affordable. They change the bed linens daily and give you fresh towels for free, even a second one during the day. Toothbrushes and personal care products are free too. Getting around was easy. Ueno Station, Okachimachi Metro, and the Keisei Skyliner are all within walking distance, and most tourist spots are walkable or under an hour away. The hostel has seven floors, with a kitchen and lovely Zen garden on the second, laundry and dryers on the third, and a free Onsen and sauna on the fourth. I liked relaxing in the common areas on floors two and four. The staff are friendly and always smiling. The furniture and interior are older, but I didn’t mind. It gives the place a charming retro feel. I’d recommend it if you want somewhere central, clean, and authentic in Tokyo.

I stayed one night on May 31, 2026. I’ve been here before and it was fine, but this time the public bath and sauna on the fourth floor were closed for refurbishment, which was a big disappointment. If those facilities matter to you, check whether they’ve reopened before booking.

The bathhouse on the fourth floor was really relaxing, with a hot tub, cold tub, and sauna. It’s traditional, so you sit on a stool and wash before getting into the baths. It was busy, and being around lots of naked men could be a bit of a show if you’re not used to that. I have a tattoo and nobody minded. The showers had shaving cream, razors, and toothbrushes; shampoo, conditioner, body wash, hair dryers, and hair products were available too. My 120 cm bed on the second floor was comfortable, and the place felt like a real capsule hotel, simple but comfy. You have to carry your bags upstairs. There’s space for large luggage on level three, while the locker on your own floor should fit a small backpack. Shoes have to come off as you move around. It was quiet enough overnight, although the lights stay on. The curtains didn’t block enough light for me, so I needed an eye mask. There’s a smoking area, and my floor smelled a bit because of it. Glad I stayed.

The location is hard to beat, and the price is good for Tokyo, especially since towels, scrub towels, soap, and other basics are included. The sento was better than the ones at other places I’d tried, which saved me some small costs too. The staff were really nice, but my friend had things taken from his cube and they wouldn’t help look for them, even after he filed a report and the police called the hotel. They provide lockers, so make sure you use one.
