Minshuku Okamotoya

We’ve been here several times after the Bon holiday. The food always leaves me wishing I had another stomach. The rooms are clean, and you can see the sea from the third floor. The beach is close, and even if you come back covered in sand, there’s a warm-water shower by the back entrance, just ten steps from the bath.

The proprietress and her husband at Okamoto-ya in Takeno, Kirihama are both lovely. The grilled crab is especially hard to resist, with that fragrant smell and the sweetness crab has. Crab sashimi served shabu-shabu style is tasty too, especially dipped in crab miso. There’s plenty to eat: fish sashimi, sweet shrimp, crab sashimi, crab miso, grilled crab, crab hot pot, and crab porridge. You’ll leave completely full. Definitely try it.

The sea is beautiful, and that’s one reason I come back every year. But what keeps me returning most is the genuinely heartfelt hospitality from the landlady and staff at Okamotoya. The food, the sea, the lodging, and the people are all the best.

It’s a homely guesthouse with clean, new rooms. The crab course is filling, and the sashimi is fresh and delicious. In summer you can swim in the sea. The bathroom is small, but that makes sense for a guesthouse.
