Fukusenka

We really enjoyed the private bath, especially the Hinoki one beside the river. There are four private baths in different styles, and we paid extra to use one for an hour. The onsen water itself was excellent and left our skin feeling noticeably smooth, even though the public bath area looked old and poorly maintained. The hotel has a family-run feel, with a family photo of the owner displayed and an interview with them in a local magazine. Its design has an old-fashioned, traditional look, though some rooms have been updated in a more modern style. Dinner and breakfast were well cooked and nicely seasoned, despite not using gourmet ingredients. For a room rate that includes both meals, it felt reasonable.

After living abroad for a few years, I was dealing with chronic fatigue, so I tried bathing in an onsen. It was amazing how much more relaxed I felt afterward, and it eased the fatigue. Soaking while looking out at Chikugogawa and Mount Hiko was beautiful. I especially loved that it was a private family onsen.

A cozy, welcoming place, and the staff were accommodating.

The staff were lovely and very helpful. Highly recommend.
