The room had what I needed, and the large table was handy for laptop work. A small drawback was the bathtub, which was a bit small. On the plus side, it filled quickly enough for me to soak both in the evening and in the morning. The price was reasonable, and the hotel is near Uozu Station with ample parking, so it’s convenient by car or train. The parking is on the first floor of the building, covered from rain and strong sun. If it fills up, there’s uncovered parking on the second floor via a ramp. That area seemed to be for monthly rentals, so it can’t be used. I appreciated that a microwave, hot water dispenser, and coffee maker were placed by the elevator, especially the good coffee available any time. The supermarket across the street closes at 8 PM, but I was told Osaka-ya stays open until 9 PM, so I could shop there. For anyone walking, there’s a convenience store near the station. I stayed during cherry blossom season, on the day I photographed the "Asahi Funakawa Hara Quartet" in Asahi Town. Since I wanted to take it easy before traveling the next day, I was glad checkout was at 11 AM. I plan to stay here again next cherry blossom season, and I’d also like to see the mirages Uozu City is known for.

I couldn’t sleep at all because of the bed, and I never want to stay here again. It was horribly hard, with a plastic bump right where the springs were, pressing directly against my body. There was a mattress on top, but it was so thin it didn’t ease the pressure. I wonder if the staff have ever slept on it to check. This was the worst bed I’ve experienced.

The room was small but acceptable, though the bed was very narrow, maybe a semi-single. There was free coffee across from the first-floor front desk, which I appreciated. The hotel is close to Uozu Station and has free parking, but the first floor was full, so I parked on the second floor, reached by a slope. It looked mixed in with residents’ parking for the apartment building, which confused me at first. I also had trouble finding the stairs down to the first-floor lobby. The water heater was the electromagnetic type you switch on by placing a stainless steel cup on it, which I hadn’t used in a while.

My one night here was hell. The room was covered in stains, and I kept wondering if they were ever going to do anything about them. Even if it’s cheap, is this really the kind of service they want to offer? I have serious doubts. At the same price or just a little more, I’d recommend staying at the APA Hotel.

This isn’t somewhere I’d recommend to everyone, though it’s possible to stay here. That’s why I gave it 3 stars. Getting around is convenient: both the Ainokaze and Toyama Chihō Railway lines are accessible, there’s a shopping center right next door with food and a 100-yen store, and city buses run from both the station and shopping center. I also appreciated being able to borrow an umbrella, since Toyama gets a lot of rain and I don’t want to pack one. The washing machine is free, which helps on a longer stay. Detergent costs 100 yen, but if you need more than two loads, you can get it at the 100-yen store nearby. There’s no dryer, and drying clothes in the room is practically impossible. The coin laundry about a 2-minute walk away has dryers at 100 yen for 10 minutes. The downsides bothered me. The carpet is stained or moldy, and the shower curtain is a little moldy too. Fussy people probably won’t like it. The smoking area is right by the entrance, so cigarette smoke hangs around and can affect people’s health. I’m against passive smoking, and putting it there feels no different from having a smoking area in the lobby. Some things on the front desk service list aren’t actually available. Miso soup and tea were listed, but when I asked, I was told they weren’t available due to COVID-19. It leaves a very different impression to list something as a service and not provide it than to remove or hide the listing from the start.
