Yakushima Iwasaki Hotel

The lobby is beautiful. The bar was closed because of COVID... in 2026 🤣 The onsen isn't open to outside guests.

The beds were good and the rooms spacious, and the hotel was clean and pleasant with a bit of an 80s retro feel. Service was good, and both dinner and breakfast were quite nice, with attentive service. I enjoyed my stay overall. The main annoyance was the American-style bedding in the western rooms, with a comforter and tucked-in top sheet. I find that setup really uncomfortable to sleep under. They should switch to duvets with covers, which are far better.

Everything felt old, from the furniture in the room to the bathroom and shower. The hair dryer had no power, so I couldn't use it. The bed and blanket need replacing, but the owner doesn't want to change them. Breakfast was nearly the same every day, with very little choice, and the Wi-Fi didn't work. It was an expensive, terrible hotel and the service wasn't worth what I paid. They should close it and renovate.

The room was shockingly dated, with a bed and mattress that felt 50 years old. It had the look of a black-and-white film. Breakfast the next morning was a letdown too. If you don't eat fish, there's almost nothing to choose from. The Wi-Fi was a disaster, and at this price, I expected far more. Things went badly from check-in at noon. The unfriendly front office manager refused to give us the room even though it was ready. At checkout, they asked for a 300 yen per day bathing tax, despite us never bathing. That should have been included in a room costing USD 272 per night. The receptionist didn't speak any English and couldn't operate the translation device either. Yakushima Iwasaki Hotel was a big disappointment. We'll never book with Iwasaki Group again. They seem to have no passion for their customers.
