The meals were a highlight for me, especially the squid and anchovy orecchiette. Everything tasted carefully made, with balanced seasoning, and the homemade bread went perfectly with it. I don’t drink, though I imagine the food would work well with wine. The owner was also happy to answer sightseeing questions and arranged a good-value way for us to attend the Autumn Leaves Festival that day. There was even a handmade folder of local information in the room. I appreciated how much they wanted guests to enjoy their stay, and I’d like to come back. The grounds and building looked like something from a picture book, framed by autumn leaves. It’s a small property, but very well cared for, and I enjoyed looking around. We stayed in a detached house. Inside it was quiet, clean, and felt new. The room was Japanese-Western style, unlike what I expected from the exterior, and had good air conditioning and a well-equipped toilet. The spacious tiled indoor bath was charming, and the amenities were thoughtfully provided. On a clear morning, Mt. Fuji appeared through the trees from the window. For sightseeing by car, the location worked well. Oshino Hakkai and Myojinyama Panorama Observatory, along with other well-known spots around Lake Yamanaka, were roughly 10-20 minutes away. It seemed like a great place to catch an early view of Mt. Fuji. The turn off the lakeside road is short, but the lane is only wide enough for one car. It isn’t one-way and traffic was light, though meeting another car could make it tricky. The reserved open-air bath wasn’t a hot spring, but the jetted tub was pleasant. Since the shower is outdoors too, it felt quite cold in autumn and winter. Washing in the room’s bath first might be more comfortable. There were a few drawbacks. The room had a slightly musty smell at first, though I got used to it after about ten minutes. The indoor bath is roomy and nice, but it can’t be reheated in the cold season, and the bathroom itself is cold. That could be inconvenient for older guests. I also felt the staff could explain the food more clearly, including the dishes and ingredients. It might be nice to hear guests’ impressions after the meal and exchange thoughts. Even with those issues, I’m glad I stayed here. It was a lovely inn, and I definitely want to return.

We usually choose larger ryokans or hotels, but this trip to Mount Fuji reminded us how nice a guesthouse can be. My wife and I had a quiet, relaxing stay and are grateful for it. The view of Mount Fuji from the property was wonderful, and we’d be happy to come back. We’d booked through a big travel site, then the owner called right away to let us know we could get Yamanakako Village’s travel discount by booking directly. They kindly helped us switch to the lower rate. We were a little unsure about staying at a guesthouse again after a long break, but the warm building and well-kept facilities put us at ease. The food was delicious and each dish was carefully prepared. The portions were a little small for me since I eat a lot, but my wife and I both enjoyed the meals.
My room was clean and comfortable, though it was on the first floor close to the dining room, so I could hear quite a bit of noise. Around 8:30 in the evening, the vacuum and clattering dishes carried through the building. I wish they’d been a little more considerate. The inside of the property was tidy, and on a clear day Mt. Fuji looks beautiful over Lake Yamanaka. The food, though, was disappointing for me. They describe it as Southern European home cooking with original adaptations, which made me expect something adjusted to Japanese tastes. Instead, the overall flavors felt strong, especially the alcoholic notes and sourness, and I didn’t enjoy it. I found a menu image on Google that was identical to a review photo from years ago, so it was hard to know what would be served. That took away the anticipation of the meal. They announce each dish as it arrives, but the voices were so quiet that I couldn’t make out the names. If they care so much about the food, I wish they’d explain it more clearly. The appetizers were particularly strong in flavor, then the zucchini milk soup was so mild I could barely taste it. I mostly noticed the milk aroma, which would be tough for someone who doesn’t like milk.
We had a lovely view from this guesthouse on a small hill, and it seems like a good choice for a family trip. Mt. Fuji was covered by clouds when I arrived, which was disappointing, though the scenery was still beautiful. I could see the mountain in the morning, so that helped. The food was delicious, with nothing I could fault. After a long day of travel, the open-air bath was a great way to unwind, and you can use it by reservation. The only small drawback is the narrow road up to the guesthouse, with some steep slopes.
I had a relaxing stay and would recommend the inn. The pillows felt a little too firm for me, though that’s just my preference. I liked the meal and the balcony views of Mt. Fuji and the garden trees, and the open-air bath was a nice place to unwind. The building is fairly new and the care put into it shows throughout.
