This felt unlike anything else. We bathed with monkeys, then came back to find hand-foraged vegetables for dinner. There are retro games and manga in one room, plus ping pong. The building is old and the facilities are basic, not resort-style, but its rustic wooden details and charm made it beautiful. You're staying in a family's home, and those 100-plus-year-old staircases have been used by the family for generations. Their kindness will stay with us. Thank you for making our honeymoon so wonderful. I hope we can return one day.

I didn't expect so many snow monkeys to bathe alongside people. They're adorable and very calm if you ignore them. It was an unbelievably amazing experience, and I'd go again even though it takes a 30-minute walk to get there. The place is old and shabby, with very basic facilities, but I found it beautiful and enjoyed being surrounded by nature instead of luxury.

This is only about the onsen facilities. At ¥1,500 each, the experience was honestly shocking. We tried the outdoor bath, but left almost right away. We arrived before opening so we could get in at 12:00 and hopefully enjoy some quiet. The entrance area had piles of monkey feces in several places. I know monkeys are the attraction and that some mess comes with wildlife, but this looked like it had been left to build up, not just a little nature. We tried to overlook it and go inside, but the onsen felt neglected too. It was cold, visibly dirty, and poorly maintained. There was a half-eaten apple hanging near an aquarium, and residue was floating in the indoor bath or stuck to its sides. There wasn't even a shower to rinse off afterward. I respect that this is a wildlife attraction, but basic hygiene and upkeep are reasonable to expect. Very disappointing. I'd suggest seeing the monkeys in the bath and skipping the onsen itself.

Dinner and breakfast were delicious, and the owners were kind and helpful. The location is hard to beat: you can go up the stairway and reach the monkey park before the crowds arrive. Sitting outside in the onsen at night while snow monkeys were around was a wonderful experience. Highly recommend!

The owner was lovely and accommodating, and made wholesome meals with pickled vegetables he had harvested himself in the surrounding mountains. The forest was peaceful, and watching the monkeys and the geyser from our traditional Japanese room was wonderful. We stayed one night in March 2025. The building is old and badly in need of renovation, but despite its run-down condition, we had an unforgettable stay.
