Maruka Ryokan

The private bath was a nice extra, though it could use more regular cleaning. The room itself was spacious and pretty, but there were bugs and one heater didn’t work. We also got no proper explanation of the facilities, including how to use the unusual kettle, even though I was speaking Japanese and they say they welcome foreign guests. I had someone with me who didn’t speak Japanese. Since we only stayed one night, there wasn’t much chance to ask, and the caretaker or front desk staff were off duty by 8. Wi-Fi only worked in the common room, which was a bit stressful.

My son and I loved our stay. The owners were so kind, the rooms warm and lovely, and the old building had a lot of character, with a bamboo forest right beside it. The onsen was great, though so hot we had to add cold water. We ate really well, too. The Alps are nearby, with snow higher up, and the snow monkey park is close.

We found this to be great value, especially with newer places nearby costing so much more. It’s also well placed for Snow Monkey Park, World Peace Cannon, hikes, and things in town. My wife and I stayed in May 2025, and the older couple who own it were very sweet. Their son seemed to handle most of the day-to-day and was helpful and accommodating. The ryokan’s own onsen felt a little neglected, but guests can ask for the key to a public onsen about 30m down the street. I loved sitting quietly and looking out over the garden. 5/5, would recommend.

Freezing, dusty, dirty, and old. The shared bathroom had such a tiny sink that washing my hands was impossible.
