Crystal Inn Naeba

We stayed one night over New Year with five families and no meals. I called about availability, and bringing our own towels and amenities got us a 400 yen discount per person. The walls are thin, but that's probably how private lodgings are, and it depends who's in the next room lol. The friend who used the bath said it was hot, though you can cool it down with water. The couple were really friendly, and it's close to the slopes. I appreciated the price.

The staff were easy to talk to and very helpful, and we had a great two-night stay with my two kids and mother for skiing and snowboarding at Naeba Ski Resort. We booked two meals a day. Dinner was a different hot pot each day with udon, rice, and dessert, while the Japanese-style breakfasts were just the right size. The shared toilet and bathroom in our room caused no problems. You can buy discounted lift tickets for Naeba Ski Resort. Renting gear at the slopes is expensive, so it's cheaper to use the rental shop on the way from the inn. I'd definitely stay again. The owner and hostess were helpful, and the place was clean. I was a little nervous about the room when booking, but it turned out acceptable. Ours was near the counter where people filled thermoses, and it got noisy late at night with instant noodles and chatting. Breakfast was Japanese-style. The shop's coupons made ski rental much cheaper, and it's close by. They drove us to the Prince Hotel, but we had to walk back. In heavy snow, carrying bags and skis was a bit of a slog. After the three of us got lost leaving the resort, the shop even sent a car to find us. If you don't mind paying more, renting from the Prince Hotel directly is easier, but costs almost 1.5 times as much.

For winter, I think this is the best combination of value and location. There's an izakaya nearby, which is nice too.
