A quiet base with a great location. Doric Cottages is near the airport, and Carrefour and the Diani shopping center are easy to reach. It does feel self-service: you need to buy your own drinking water, cleaning is done every two days, and AC is only in the rooms. There’s also a strict daily electricity limit of 15 units, so you’ll have to manage the AC carefully to stay within it.

The beds are made of cement. Yes, really. You can’t shake them, trust me. Sleeping on one feels like lying on a mattress on top of a grave. The cottages have a vintage look. They’re two-bedroom units with one small shared bathroom and toilet, an outdoor dining area, a small TV, and a tiny kitchen. There’s no restaurant since it’s self-catering. In the kitchen, they don’t provide soap, sugar, salt, or tea bags, even though you’d expect those in many self-catering cottages or AirBnBs. When I was checking out, someone rushed in and stopped me to check the room for breakages or missing items, I think.

The day before I was due to travel, they canceled my reservation and said they'd accidentally overbooked. I still don't understand how that happened after I'd spoken with four different staff members and none had caught it sooner. I did find somewhere much better, and at a better price: Nallah's Apartment at Rosa Mystica. The place and its host, Noel, are a real gem!
