I had booked a private room with a “private balcony,” but couldn't sleep all night. The window faced the street, where homeless locals had put a mattress under it, smoking illegal substances and shouting and screaming. There was also no electricity or water most of the time, and the area felt very unsafe, with homeless people harassing you for money and yelling racist slurs. Around midnight, another guest from the dorm came onto my “private balcony,” smoking, playing loud music, and shouting. I told him it wasn't acceptable, and he became aggressive. He was still there in the morning, and the ashtray had over 10 cigarettes in it. I woke up coughing from the strong smell and felt sick for the following days. Staff did nothing to fix any of this. The receptionist david was especially rude and arrogant. Don't book a pickup through them. They'll cheat you and ask for double the price. The same goes for the “excursions” they offer on site, which are overpriced compared with local prices.
The cafe's food was good, especially breakfast, and the service and hospitality were great. They also washed my dusty, dirty Safari clothes for a reasonable 50 kes per piece. Noise wasn't an issue. The place can be a little hard to find, but there's a sign by the road. My private room had a ceiling fan and a floor fan but no AC. With humidity at 80 percent or higher, I found sleeping uncomfortable. I shared a bathroom with a shower. The water never got hot and the pressure was weak, though since I was hot and sweaty, the cold shower was welcome. If I could afford to stay elsewhere, I wouldn't come back.
The electricity was down most of the time, which was a small issue. Still, the room was very clean and had a special ocean view. The staff were super friendly, and they served the best food I ate in kenya. You have to try their menu.
The Tulia family were so welcoming when my 9 year old and I arrived at 4am, straight from sgr. They let us share a bed so we could nap and freshen up. We then had a lovely Swahili breakfast, all for under ksh.2000. When it was time to go, they called us a tuktuk despite the rain. Great service.
I gave one star because I was shoved out of the window beside my bed. I had been drinking and ordered more through the waitress. She was kind and asked someone to buy a 750 cl bottle. I paid, but the boy brought only a small bottle, so I asked her to tell him to give her the rest of the money instead of keeping it for himself. Apparently he didn't like that. He shoved me through the window right next to my bed. I couldn't have fallen out on my own. I broke my ribs and arm and spent 6 nights in hospital. Be very careful at this place.
