Deka Hotel Nairobi

The staff at breakfast and in the restaurant were nice, and breakfast itself was good. The location was okay too, though walking to the city centre means passing through a rough area that can feel a bit scary. This wasn’t even the cheapest place we stayed in Kenya, so I was disappointed. Check-in went fine, even though we arrived late at night. We landed at the airport at 3 am, the exchange place was closed, and we had no local currency. They took our dollars but couldn’t give us change, saying they’d hold the money as a deposit until we changed cash and paid in Kenyan shillings the next day. Then, to our surprise, they exchanged our money for us at a bank, apparently at a very poor rate, which made the stay more expensive. It was the rate they wanted. Our booking included breakfast, but they initially said it didn’t, and we had to argue about it. The rooms were in poor shape, with old, broken things and very dirty windows. The bathroom window wouldn’t shut, so mosquitoes got in. There were lots of cockroaches in the bathroom, and we saw two in the room as well.

The staff were cool and had nothing to do with this opinion. But Deka was the worst place I’ve ever stayed. There was no water or electricity, and roaches, rats, bugs, and other insects were running around. Even a prison would be cleaner, I imagine. Never again.

A nice, relaxing, reliable place. Booking by phone or online is easy, and both the receptionist and the guy on the phone were very friendly. I’d recommend this b&b when visiting Nairobi.
