Thomson Falls Lodge

Dinner was terrible. We ordered a whole kienyeji chicken an hour ahead, but it arrived missing pieces. When we asked, the chef couldn't explain why there were no thighs. The sides were undercooked, so we sent them back and never saw them again. We tried repeatedly to reach the manager, but got no response.

We stop here for the clean washrooms, and like grabbing masala chips with an ice-cold novida for a quick snack. The views of Nyahururu falls are great too.

They charge people at the gate, then ask for more money when they try to leave, without first telling visitors that payment is required to access the facility. That practice feels predatory.

The rooms are simple but comfortable, and the fireplace works well. A fireman comes to build the fire and leaves a few logs so you can keep it going when it dies down. The rooms stay toasty. The staff come across as professional, and the food is up to standard. Vegetarian choices aren't extensive, but there's always veggie curry. Breakfast and lunch are buffet style, though you can request what you prefer. Right next to the falls, the lodge has lovely trees and lawns, and the log-interior buildings give it a rustic look. The kids' playground is child-friendly and has a view of the falls. It costs Ksh.100 per kid. It's a wonderful spot for a relaxing staycation. Mornings and evenings are chilly, so pack sweaters and socks. Afternoons are sunny, so bring a sun hat.
