Backpacker Heaven

We stayed one night after returning from koh rong. The room was clean and the staff were helpful and friendly. We paid after checking out, and they helped break our larger currency into smaller notes. They also arranged transport to our next stop for a reasonable price. The location was very quiet, though it seemed quite unsafe, as locals had mentioned too. I'd maybe stay here only if necessary.

Filthy and dangerously mouldy throughout, with rude, confrontational staff. Avoid. We were asked to pay for the whole stay before seeing the rooms, and politely asked to check in first. It turned out our caution was justified. Both double rooms were filthy, with black mould spreading up the walls to the ceiling and over the curtains, which touched the beds and pillows. As soon as we entered the first room, the front of house staff ran off with two pillows before we could work out why. Looking more closely, we found little bugs and spiders in the sheets and mattresses in both rooms, plus heaps of filth in the wardrobes and corners. The staff brought back “fresh pillows” with clean outer covers, but inside they were tea-coloured, stained and speckled with black mould. They looked ancient and badly in need of replacement. The pillows in the second room were just the same, and the replacements we requested were just as mouldy. When we said we wanted to cancel, the front of house staff member took one of us back to the rooms and shouted aggressively that we'd messed them up. He implied we should pay because the bedsheets had slightly upturned corners where we'd inspected them. One of our group is immunocompromised, so sleeping in mouldy rooms and on mouldy pillows could have been fatal. We had to explain and repeat that twice while he shouted at us. We left without an apology.

The staff were lazy and couldn't respond to me. They refused a late check-in because they were too lazy to make arrangements for a customer. They took the charge for one night even though they knew I'd have to pay for a cancellation. I contacted booking customer service, but they didn't reply or make an exception after the hotel refused to let me check in. I had to pay for a second hotel as well. This feels like theft. Don't go there. They deserve to close their business.

Probably the worst value for money in all of Sihanoukville. They charge more than $40 a night, even though it's like what you'd expect from a $10 hotel, with just a thin bedsheet. The hotel sits between two construction cites and has no soundproofing at all. There's a pool, but it's about a 50-meter walk away. Between the distance and the construction noise, nobody uses it, and it isn't maintained. I'd stay away!
