Ocean View Pension No. 2

The toilet made it clear the room hadn’t been cleaned properly. You could see what the previous occupant left behind, and there were bees around too. It was filthy. I first blamed the nearby forest for the bugs, but the state of the bathroom changed my mind. Cockroaches kept appearing, even after I killed one, and an Australian spider showed up as well. Since they were alive and kicking, I could put up with them. The room only had mosquito repellent, so I asked for something for cockroaches. They said they had everything and bought something for me, but I couldn’t even tell what it was. That made me feel they were missing the basics of service. A cockroach was there to greet me as soon as I walked in, too.

We were seven, including my parents, my nephew, and three children, and had a great time in Jeju. With the place to ourselves, we could jump around and shout as much as we wanted. My parents enjoyed it too, so we were all very satisfied.

The main downside was how isolated the pension is. There aren’t any restaurants, shops, or even convenience stores nearby, and once it gets dark the area is pitch-black. Stock up on drinks, snacks, and other essentials at a supermarket or convenience store before heading there. It’s about 20km from Seongsan Port. We booked Jeju Ocean View 2nd Pension for a three-day, two-night trip in mid-April, during the off-season, and got a fairly low price. The ocean view, despite the name, wasn’t spectacular. The two-story building gave us privacy and felt roomy for six people. There were two bedrooms upstairs, a living room and kitchen downstairs, and a bathroom on each floor. The rooms showed their age but were well kept. The shower had strong pressure and plenty of hot water. Breakfast was provided, and the grill and burner service came in handy. There was also a heated pool and sauna available for an additional fee. Parking was spacious and right by the building, so loading and unloading bags was easy.

The fountain in the photo had water that looked like rotten green algae latte, and using the aquatic plants cost an extra 30,000 won. The pension was around 290,000 won, yet there’s nothing within a few kilometers. It has a living room and three bedrooms, but air conditioning is only in the living room and one bedroom. The other two rooms have fans, so it was extremely hot. There were lots of bugs as well.
