Motif.One is a special place for healing and restoring a sense of what it means to live. I’d been planning and hoping to visit for three years, and it felt like a once-in-a-lifetime place. It can be hard to book a stay there. Every visitor can return to their original self here, it seems. We couldn’t get a booking, but when the daughter, who now owns and cares for Motif.One, learned we’d come to Paju Henri Art village, she came out to meet us in the village and welcomed us warmly. She hugged us and treated us like family, then showed us around the house, pointing out special spots where visitors might find their own ideas and experiences. The pictures tell the story of this famous place to stay. There are thousands of books, neatly arranged, and artisans’ spaces throughout the house. Everywhere we looked, there was something interesting, enough to spend the whole day exploring. We were overwhelmed by her hospitality and friendly personality. The atmosphere at Motif.one was peaceful and spiritual. Thank you for inviting us in and receiving us as guests. We hope to come back and see you again one day. I stayed here a month ago and enjoyed it. The hotel and every piece of furniture felt like art, and the owner is a Korean director and writer. The rooms can feel a bit overpriced for their size, though.

I’d wanted to visit ever since seeing the communal living room with its beautiful stacks of books. Getting there without a car was easy: I took the 2200 bus from Hapjeong Station Exit 1 and got off at Heyri Gate 1, then walked a short way. The host welcomed me warmly and offered a freshly baked galette with a glass of mulled wine. It made me feel warm. ☺️ I enjoyed looking through the varied collection, from vintage books from the 70s and 80s to new releases, and finding books I wanted to read. The communal kitchen was nice too, with tea and coffee available to enjoy as much as I liked. I’d love to come back in spring or summer to see the lush green scenery outside.

There were so many books, and it was lovely to spend time somewhere quiet and peaceful. I found the memory foam bed very uncomfortable, though.
