I stayed one short night before hiking in Chiaksan. It’s a bit old-fashioned, but nearly perfect for what I needed: clean, quiet, with TV and Wifi, and very affordable.

It felt a little like a haunted house sitting there by itself, which was pretty scary at night. Weekdays seem quiet, with few guests, and getting there without a car is difficult. There’s a convenience store about a 15-minute walk away. The interior is quite dated, but the bedding was clean and the heating worked well. The owner was friendly, and each floor has a water dispenser. On weekdays, it costs 80,000 won for five people.
In a quiet area, this older hotel is affordable and the staff are very friendly, so I’d like to come back. It’s peaceful enough to rest comfortably. There aren’t restaurants or convenience stores inside the hotel, but a few minutes’ drive gets you to several of both, about 3-5 minutes.
Getting to convenience stores, cafés, or restaurants means driving to Hoengseong-eup, which is the main downside. The building is old, but it's kept up well and was generally clean. The bedding was especially clean.
