Hostel 888

The room and linen were clean, but I had an awful stay. The men's bathroom had mold on the walls, and the shower cradle looked like it had been broken for ages. If you want to wash your hair, be ready to squat down. Wi-Fi only worked downstairs near reception, and when I asked about drinking water, the receptionist just pointed to the basement kitchen without saying anything. There was only a tap there. Check-in was unpleasant too. The male receptionist took my passport, then said, “Pay now. In cash.” He could speak English clearly when he later tried to sell me laundry services, so that wasn't the issue. When I handed over cash, he grumbled about having to give me change. It was my first day in Kazakhstan, and apparently I was expected to have exact change to keep the hotel staff happy. I'd planned to stay five nights while exploring Almaty, but fortunately I'd only booked one.

I was there as a tour guide helping a guest check in, so I didn't use the hostel myself. It's small but cozy, and the people were friendly and helpful. The host gave us all the information we needed. Guests from around the world seemed to be like one big family, and it was interesting talking with them. I highly recommend the place.

You can walk to the centre in about 20 minutes, and there are a few places to eat nearby. This is a solid budget option in Almaty, though the facilities are basic since it's part of a family's home. The staff were fairly friendly. Wi-Fi wasn't great, and the beds could be more comfortable.

I had no complaints while staying here. Definitely recommend this hostel.
