Hostel O2 Hostel

There’s a good-sized kitchen and washroom, plus complimentary tea and water. WiFi was great, and the place itself is spacious. It’s a short walk from Almaty's main bus terminal, with bus stops just a few metres away and the reservoir park right across the street. Prices differ between booking platforms, but I’d still call it a reliable option. Would definitely recommend.

The man working here made the stay for me. He spoke fluent English, was incredibly polite and attentive, and treated guests like family. Talking with him was always a pleasure. He seemed gentle, and I later heard he had served in the marine corps, trained in martial arts, and won a city-level MMA title before an injury made him stop. One night some bad people harassed Chinese tourists outside and tried to break into the hostel. He went out, and they quickly apologized and backed off. I was told people in the area know him and keep their distance. It left me feeling this was an exceptionally safe place to stay. For me, this was the best hostel experience, and the place felt like home.

The receptionist, Karina, was friendly and helpful, and most of the guests seemed to be from China. The hostel is near Sairan bus station, though a bit far from the city center. My room was far enough from the common area that I couldn’t get WiFi. The toilet was always dirty, probably because of the guests, but the hostel should check and clean it more often. The bins are tiny, so rubbish ends up on the floor.

The atmosphere was nice, and it’s very close to sayran lake. One of the cleanest hostels in almaty.
