The plastic cover on the mattress was noisy and a little uncomfortable, and the pool table needs new cues badly. The rest worked well for me: free breakfast, air conditioning, and a private toilet in the four-bed dorm. I paid $36 for two beds for two nights. It’s under five minutes on foot from the night market, with shops less than a minute away, and the hostel can arrange transport.

We spent five nights here, and it felt like home. The hostel was so clean, the showers stayed hot for ages, and the staff were lovely, accommodating, and incredibly helpful. Mr Lan even found us a train after it had sold out and helped our friend retrieve things left at another hostel. He really seemed able to help with anything, and is a huge asset to downtown hostel.

The cushion still had its plastic wrapping on, so sleeping on it was uncomfortable, noisy whenever I moved, and bad for your health. That’s unacceptable.

The dorm floors could use more frequent cleaning, and the WiFi barely worked in the rooms. Still, for the price and location, I don’t understand the bad reviews. Our second-floor, four-bed dorm was modern, roomy, and had great air conditioning. There were enough bathrooms that we never had to wait. The common area has a pool table and beer for sale, though it could be a bit larger. Breakfast was a nice extra, and the staff were friendly and helpful. Renting a scooter through the hostel was easy too.
