Phu Thevada Hotel

We arrived in town after dark and thought this would work for one night. Big mistake. The receptionist was dismissive and rude, and the place was filthy, from the rooms to the grounds. There were cockroaches in the bathroom, sockets hanging off the wall, and rubbish piled everywhere, even blocking much of our room. See pictures. Paying 360,000 kip to sleep in a hovel is absurd. Avoid at all costs.

We paid 500k with breakfast, which felt expensive for an only-okay room. Breakfast was plain bread, cold fried eggs, and some salad vegetables, with not-great coffee. We also ate at the restaurant the night before. The food was alright, but we waited an hour for it, while tables that arrived later and ordered after us were served first. Even our drinks took 45 minutes, and it seemed they had simply forgotten our order.

I've had dinner here several times, and every dish I've tried has been very good. There are some vegetarian choices, and the menu is in English, though the staff don't speak it. Service can be slow, but the staff are mostly friendly, and it's usually quite peaceful. Prices are higher than at nearby restaurants, though not expensive for a European tourist, and I think the food is worth it. Basic dishes cost around 30-60 000kip.

The hotel is overpriced too. At the restaurant, the grumpy old man freaked out and started yelling at me when I politely asked him to turn down his phone, which was playing war videos at TOP VOLUME.
