I booked weeks ahead, but when I arrived the staff seemed surprised, and it took them a while to come to the reception desk. The girl said she needed to keep my passport because I wasn’t ready to pay straight away. When I politely asked where she’d keep it, she got annoyed and said, “I’m working here, I’m busy!” It was an awful attitude, so rude. In all my years travelling, I’ve never felt so unwelcome. They took me to one room, but after I’d put down my bag, the owner said, “no someone else needs this room,” and moved me to another. The rooms are fine, but the soundproofing is terrible. You can hear people as if they’re right next to you. Early one morning the LED lights in my room came on and woke me up for no reason. It seemed like they’d lazily wired the lights for all the rooms to one switch. The duvet was far too thick for such a hot country. The poor Bangladeshi woman was made to do everything, and she looked visibly tired and stressed. There was a sign in the room saying something like, “we want to provide you a comfortable budget room for your stay, please leave feedback it’s valuable to us.” That felt cheeky. It isn’t budget, it’s expensive for such garbage, and I’m pretty sure the owners won’t read this. I didn’t eat at the restaurant, but saw the prices, and there’s much cheaper, quality food around here. Anyone thinking of booking should avoid it, because you’ll be extremely disappointed.

Byblos feels like an evening town. In the mornings it’s incredibly hard to find breakfast or even coffee, though Edde's Yard seems like the best bet for coffee. There’s also a lot of noise in the evenings. We enjoyed our stay at the Fishing Club, and Iris is probably the best place to stay in Byblos. Still, it’s eccentric at best, a rambling set of harbor-front restaurants and guest rooms tucked into old buildings. It has atmosphere by the tonne, but not many facilities. Dint come expecting much :)

The room was very basic, with broken bathroom walls and no proper curtain to keep the light out of the window, and it wasn’t even cheap. I’d expected good seafood from a fishing club. The octopus tasted canned, while the small fried fish was oily and had no meat. The catch-of-the-day fish was good, but really pricey, over $100 per kg.

You can enjoy the city and its nightlife from this guesthouse without needing any kind of transportation. The location is perfect, the staff are friendly and ready to help with any request, and the prices are more than fair. Highly recommended!

The location is perfect, and the accommodation is clean with a nice terrace where you can sit on the outdoor sofa. Check-in is at 1pm, so if you get there early, you have to wait. The WiFi is a little slow, so don’t expect to back up your photos :)
