The family were friendly and welcoming, even though their English wasn’t great. But the hygiene was awful. The bathroom still had hair, soap residue, and dirt from the previous guest, and the towel looked used. When I asked the woman of the house to clean it, she just splashed water on the floor and sink, leaving the dirty parts as they were. There were ants in one of the beds, the balcony table hadn’t been wiped in ages, and the rest of the house also seemed very unhygienic. I don’t mind old things or a cheap room, but it needs to be clean. The thing that made me leave was what happened that evening. My 8yo son was watching TV downstairs with the family while I showered in my room. When I came out, I saw someone recording me through the bedroom window. I screamed, opened the door, and chased after him, but only saw him run off into another part of the house. The owners said nobody had been there and that their oldest son was in the toilet. I packed up and left immediately. They tried to persuade me to stay in another room, but I was determined to go. The woman quickly brought the bill, while the father stayed on his couch and didn’t even look over to say goodbye. I don’t know who it was, but their reaction made me feel like they were trying to keep quiet about something that might have happened before. It felt VERY UNSAFE!!! The guesthouse photos in the description also aren’t photos of the place.

I noticed 1,000 rupees missing from my wallet soon after arriving. The next day I set up my camera, and it showed the hotel hostess reaching through the window to open the door. She came into the room, looked around, saw the camera pointed at her, and left. When I checked out the following day, I told her I had a recording and asked for my 1,000 rupees back. She returned it. The whole thing was awful, and I missed surfing on my last day there because of it. I didn’t feel secure.

The family who run this place are so warm and kind, and they really try to make you feel at home. They can arrange scooters, a tuk-tuk ride with the oldest of their three boys, and laundry at the shop on the property. We could also get bottled water and snacks there, and they even offered us breakfast. We came straight from Europe, so had to adjust to the different hygiene standards here, but the family made everything feel lovely. We’re sad to leave them. We also ended up going to play at the beach with the kids and dogs. If you want an authentic experience of Sri Lanka, this is a good place to stay.

Right by a beautiful beach with good waves, and there’s a top roti shop next door. Sandaru surfing inn is run by a great family. The rooms are simple, comfortable, and very well priced. I’d definitely recommend staying here, it’s well worth it.
