Upali Beach Surf Resort & Cafe

Right on the point, with food, drinks, and plenty of people to hang out with between surf sessions. As a surfer, I couldn’t ask for more. The staff are a fantastic group of guys, always ready to help. It’s the perfect spot to chill. And after a morning session, the Omlete Toast and a coffee are just the thing before a midday paddle out.

The cabins are simple but have everything you need, and this place feels like a surf paradise. You fall asleep to the sound of the waves, then can grab your board before sunrise and be right at the main surf spot. It’s amazing, basically rolling out of bed onto a wave. Nilukshan, Hari, Piyan and Kiru are what make the place so special. They’re kind, supportive, and helpful, and I really appreciated Hari’s surfing tips. From the moment you arrive, the staff make you feel supported and the whole place has wonderful vibes. I can’t recommend it enough if you love surfing and want a chill atmosphere.

The view is awesome, and it’s a great spot at one of the best surfing places in the world. Rooms are nice by Sri Lankan standards, and the staff are helpful. The ocean is so close that the showers have salt water. They charge more for services than places in town. The food is okay, but portions are small and more expensive than in the city, though still affordable. Some improvements would help: make it clear what breakfast includes, or offer a buffet even at a higher price. The refrigerator behind the bar is always empty, which makes the place look abandoned. Still, I had a great stay and recommend it.

The people working here were so warm and lovely, and the food was tasty without costing much. We felt right at home in the beach huts, which sit right at the main point by the ocean. Great if you surf, or if you just want to be by the water. We loved our stay and plan to come back.
