The staff were so welcoming, and the owner made a point of spending time with guests and going out of the way to help. The food was delicious, with good vegan options too. My room was beautiful, and the bathroom looked out toward the sea. The hotel sits among a little jungle, close to a small center, and the location felt just right. It was the most luxurious place I’ve stayed in Sri Lanka. I loved it and highly recommend it.

The staff’s response to our complaints about bugs was dismissive, and they seemed annoyed instead of sorting it out promptly. There were bugs in the room, and cleanliness overall was poor. The linens weren’t clean either, and we had to ask for the room to be cleaned repeatedly. The pool was dirty, breakfast choices were very limited, and we were unexpectedly charged for water with breakfast. That felt like a blatant money grab. Hotel Villa Thawtisa needs a lot of maintenance, and our stay was incredibly disappointing. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone looking for a clean, comfortable stay in Unawatuna. DON’T STAY AT THIS HOTEL!

The food was terrible. I ordered pasta so spicy I had to wash it before eating. The pillowcases were dirty, the bathroom wasn’t properly cleaned, and the jacuzzi was out of order and hadn’t even been cleaned. Hygiene was very poor. It was a waste of money and a really unpleasant place to be. The recent bad reviews about the hotel’s quality are true. Maybe it works for a group of male friends just enjoying the day, but I’d tell anyone to read the low ratings first. Management and staff should be ashamed of fooling people.

We booked because my wife wanted a room with a private pool, and none of the other hotels we checked in unawatuna had that kind of room. I’d read the Google reviews first and nearly ruled this place out because so many were bad, but our one night here turned out amazing. The room was clean and neat, the view was superb, and dinner at the rooftop restaurant was unbelievable. Service felt five-star. Staff told me the old management had changed and they’d done a lot of renovations over the last two months. I’d love to return and recommend it to my friends. Thank you, Thawthisa (heaven).
