Hotel Suisse Kandy - Since 1890

The front desk and room service were excellent, and Mr Mujahidh greeted us with a smile and handled everything smoothly. The hotel has a traditional feel rather than a luxurious one, but it was a cozy, calm place to stay. Kandy Lake is right across the way, and an evening walk there is well worth it.

After our Intrepid tour rep stepped in on day two, we moved to a lovely third-floor room that felt much closer to what you'd expect from a 4* hotel. That made a big difference after room 430, which was a letdown. The hotel itself is clean and well appointed, and the central location is handy, just a few minutes downhill from town. Room 430 was basic despite being part of a “premium” holiday package. Its small windows looked straight at a wall about 3 feet away. The cups were mismatched and dirty, the glasses sticky with fingerprints, and both spoons had obvious stains. The fridge was dirty and didn't seem to work at first. A porter fiddled with the plug and inside switch, and it started running, but it was still dirty. Room service responded, “oh, my god”. The bathroom was acceptable, though the mirror had fly marks and four visible filler repairs. I wouldn't rate this hotel above 2* in any country.

The breakfast spread was good and the staff were friendly, though the tea and coffee were both bad. Someone should try them and change something! I really liked the hotel's colonial character and history. Some people call it old as a criticism, but to me its age is part of what makes it beautiful and special. Renovating it into another shiny, modern hotel would take away that charm. We had a very pleasant stay.

The service was great, especially from Dinithi :) The food was good too, and the location was nice. I loved the old building, with its high ceilings and well-designed interiors. A really good experience.
