Yoho Deer Hills Rest

Nirosh and his family were lovely, and we had a wonderful time at Deer Hill. The room was spacious and comfortable, with an amazing view. We can absolutely recommend it, especially for the breakfast, which was the best local meal we had in Sri Lanka.

The balcony was where I wanted to spend time, with that gorgeous view, and the breakfast was generous and really good. Our room was huge, too. Deer Hill Rest was one of my favorite stops on my Sri Lanka trip. It sits away from Kandy’s bustle, but there’s a bus right outside that goes into the city. Thanks to Nirosh and his family for taking such good care of me!

The setting at Deer Hill is beautiful and the views are lovely, though it is a little remote. You'd need a scooter or something to get around, and there aren't really restaurants nearby. Our room was clean and very spacious, with a clean bathroom and hot shower. Nirosh and his family were kind and helpful, and we'd happily stay again.

Cyclone Ditwah passed right over Kandy while we were staying with Nirosh, Indura and Dammika. For four days we couldn't leave the house, and had no electricity, cell service, fresh food or drinking water. We were foreigners, unprepared and poorly equipped, and local authorities hadn't warned us about the approaching cyclone. Nirosh, Indura and Dammika took responsibility for us completely. They made three meals a day from whatever Indura had stored, shared what information they could, and kept reassuring us. They also tried to keep things as normal as possible while there was devastation around and below us, and while they were dealing with losses of their own. They repeatedly put our needs and even our lives ahead of theirs, protecting us with their own lives. We only had running water because Nirosh's grandparents had the foresight to connect the house to mountain water, leaving it the only house on the road with water. We've never given a more important review, and no words can express how grateful we are or capture everything this family did. By chance, we were staying in their beautiful home at exactly the time we needed to be. This became far more than a regular stay. They became family, and they'll treat you like family to the ends of the earth.
