I’m Sri Lankan by background, born and raised in Chicago, and proud of it. I’ve surfed in Weligama for five years without an issue, but this place made me feel that locals and non-white customers are treated differently from white people. After a great massage, I walked over around 1 pm for a healthy smoothie and the view. There were plenty of seats, so I chose one and went to the register with my menu and a 5,000 rupee note. I watched white tourists place orders and pay. When I politely tried to order, I was ignored, and more white customers were served ahead of me. I told the people taking orders they seemed to be making enough money from white customers that they didn’t need Sri Lankan or brown customers’ business. I never raised my voice and stayed polite. I told the two people at the front door what had happened, then left. I got a smoothie nearby instead. I won’t return, and I’ll tell Sri Lankans I know who visit from overseas to avoid this racist establishment. I’m here to unwind from my corporate job, and I still have ten days and a 3 pm surf to get to. I have lots of friends in town and love meeting people whatever their color, that’s one of the joys of travel. I reckon they lost at least five smoothie sales, plus the food my group and I might have bought, and a positive review. The nice view earns the two stars.

The manager checked in with us every day to ask how things were going, which was amazing. The staff were kind and responsible, and the rooms had lots of space. As a solo traveler, I spent a week at Hangtime Hostel and found the beds especially large and comfortable. After more than four months of travel, I still hadn’t stayed anywhere quite like it. There are plenty of activities, and Monday open mic was especially fun. The rooftop café had delicious food, and I loved the tropical smoothies.

The vegan pancakes are so good, and the bowls are excellent, especially the chocolate one!!!! Everything arrives neatly presented and packed well. My one complaint is that you’re not available often enough. I’m guessing the kitchen gets too busy with people eating in. Still, I’m very happy with the orders and looking forward to the next one. Please, please be open on Uber Eats Christmas morning! :D

Comfortable, clean accommodation and really close to the beach. The restaurant is cool and the place has good vibes. I’ve visited twice in a month, though the welcome didn’t feel as warm the second time as it did on my first visit.

The hostel is in a great spot for surfing, with daily yoga, plus a nice café and coworking space. Our private room smelled a bit, though, and the AC didn’t work very well. If being in the middle of things matters more than having a perfect room, it’s a good option. With so many surf schools across the street, choosing can be hard, but I really recommend Banda Surf.
