We spent several days here over Christmas and New Year. The beachfront location is good, and the rooms have AC, which is needed because there’s very little natural ventilation. Neptune feels more like a backpacker’s place than a resort, and the facilities need substantial investment and improvement. The restaurant food was average. We ate some of the included breakfast, then had our other meals elsewhere, including next door at W15 resort, which is clean and modern. Its boombox music in the rear yard did disturb the peace in Neptune’s rooms at night. Neptune runs on cash and doesn’t take cards. Restaurant charges for things like cool drinks were written on scraps of paper, which made the bill confusing and frustrating at checkout. Towards the end of our stay, after staff cleaned our room, some clothing was stolen. We reported it to management, but the cleaners denied it and nothing came of the report. When I asked for confirmation that I’d reported the theft, nobody would sign and they directed me to the owner in Israel, so I gave up. My travel insurance did cover it, but staff stealing is unacceptable. We enjoyed Sri Lanka, but if it hadn’t been high season with limited accommodation options, we would have stayed somewhere else.

The location is great and the bungalows are nice, but that wasn’t enough for me. The hotel staff started physically and verbally threatening me after I cancelled a taxi back to Colombo, two hours before pickup. The driver was from the next village, not from Colombo. There were bed bugs, too, and the rooms were never done. Liars and cheaters.

My friends and I came to use the pool and were willing to pay whatever it cost. From the moment we arrived, they kept pressuring us to order from the menu and reminding us about the hourly charge. Who charges by the hour for a pool? We explained that we wanted drinks and food, but at our own pace since we’d just come from a late breakfast. Then the “nice” and “polite” manager decided to kick us out and charge us by the hour. They’d served us the bill with comments and were chatting about us, so we picked up our things and left, after paying. I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone.

The hotel is in a nice location, though I’m not sure what it’ll be like after the mega hotel next door is built. There were lots of mosquitoes in our room. Glad we had a mosquito net, but some still found their way in and bit us at night.

The food was excellent, and every dish I tried at the hotel’s restaurant was a pleasure. Staff were warm, quick, and helpful with all kinds of requests, especially the manager. I planned to stay four nights in Sri Lanka and ended up staying ten. There were a few problems, but they handled them courteously and fast. A perfect stay for me.
