Dzukija Hotel

The hotel was great, and being so close to a kebab shop made it a great destination. There was nowhere to park my caravan, though, and my camel was left without shelter.

I was cycling from Warsaw to Riga. On my last day, after breakfast, I packed four sandwiches to take along because I didn’t know when I’d be able to eat dinner on the road. A man I assumed was the hotel owner started yelling, “You eat and you go, you want more? Take more you F-ing pig.” A crazy owner. Don’t take food from him, he’ll get mad.

The receptionist was polite, and the city seemed very family-oriented, but we didn’t get a good night’s sleep. We were a family of four, and the double bed was the only usable bed in my opinion, so we had to use a sofa too. One sofa was bent and left my back aching during the night; the other wouldn’t extend properly because its extra part came apart, and you could fall onto the floor. That didn’t feel safe with small children. The hotel was quiet during our weekend stay because no construction workers were renovating then, but the experience was still so-so. I appreciate that the owners bought the place and want to bring it back to life, though the renovation work seemed short on skilled workmanship and attention to detail. I noticed things like walls starting to chip or peel and scratched water taps, so I think another renovation may be needed sooner than expected.

The room was modern, newly done and clean, and the location was excellent. The only downside was the building work. On my last day, noise from the builders woke me before 8am and gave me a migraine. It was quite loud at times and started too early, so I’d have appreciated a warning about the maintenance before my stay. The room had air con, which was great, but I couldn’t control it myself because the receptionist controlled it. That was inconvenient. Otherwise, it’s a great hotel, and I’d recommend staying here.
