The Palanga Pharmacy has both architectural and historical value, and it was added to Lithuania's state-protected cultural register on May 28, 1992. Its monument list number is AtV278, and its unique object code is 1295. It's also known as the First Palanga Pharmacy, where production of the bitter “Trejos devynerios” began. During the ban on Lithuanian in Latin letters, medicine labels were still printed in Lithuanian, apparently because the owners wanted to preserve Lithuanianness. For years, medicines sold there carried the pharmacy's own trademark, “Raudonā raktā”.

I came across this account while googling: the old Palanga pharmacy was founded in 1827, and its history has both bright and dark chapters. The founder and first owner, Wilhelm Johann Grüning, a German from Riga, patented the original 27-herb “Trejos devynerios” extract. Visiting feels a bit like going to a museum, with old apothecary items and other pharmacy tools. That hanging crocodile caught me off guard. Does anyone know its story?

It's worth stepping inside, even just to look around. I don't know where else in Lithuania you'd find a pharmacy nearly two centuries old, still holding onto its old-time character 🙂. The pharmacist was kind and very helpful.

This place brings back childhood memories 😊. It's also Palanga's oldest pharmacy and is protected as an architectural monument. The staff are very attentive. They sell a cream made without preservatives, which is worth a try.
