Auberge De La Gaichel

For the price, the conditions at the Auberge were disappointing. The room was tiny, with a very old carpet, and stayed uncomfortable until morning even after I turned on the heating. The shower room was cold too, with no heat in there. Breakfast was very basic, and there wasn't any hot food.

A lovely, peaceful spot, about half an hour from Luxembourg city. It would suit a romantic break or anyone who loves nature.

We were very full and happy by the end of dinner. The four-course menu was clearly put together with a lot of care, and the food and service were both exquisite. We’ll definitely be back and would highly recommend it. The waiting staff were warm, helpful, and knew the menu well. We started with an assiette amuse bouche, then had homemade smoked salmon with horseradish cream and wakame salad, and green asparagus velouté with pea purée. Both starters had superb layers of flavour. For the next course, my wife chose beef carpaccio and I had squid spaghetti with julienne vegetables. The carpaccio was honestly the best we’ve ever tasted, while the spaghetti was sublime, creamy and subtle. We both had lamb noisettes in a crust with smoked paprika hummus and green asparagus after that. The flavours were exquisite and balanced, and the lamb was cooked perfectly. Dessert was a gourmet pina colada cocktail with limoncello and Italian meringue, plus a pistachio éclair with almond praline and blackcurrant sorbet. We decided at the last minute to book a night away as a surprise for my wife, including dinner and a junior suite. What a wonderful place. It has a great 1850s hunting lodge feel, lovely grounds, and a spacious, comfortable room.

We had plenty of choice at breakfast, including lots of pastries, and the restaurant was quite good too. The room wasn't especially spacious, but it was large enough for a comfortable stay. There was also a big free parking area, handy for anyone arriving by car. The setting, right on the Belgium-Luxemburg border in the forest, was perfect and very quiet and peaceful.
