You can sit in a nice warm area with a cup of tea while waiting for the guide, and the woman serving in the souvenir shop gave us a really warm welcome. The tour guide explained the fascinating prison history really well. I’d recommend a visit to anyone interested in Latvian or war history. It makes you realize how well off you are.

At night, some guests may find the atmosphere eerie, which adds to the experience. Staying there is about immersion rather than comfort, in a real former military prison with strict rules, guards, and a raw feel that makes you feel like an actual inmate. Its powerful, unsettling history gives it a very different feel from standard accommodation. We stayed at Karosta Prison while filming our travel show Different Huts, and it was one of our most intense and memorable experiences. Definitely not for everyone, but if you want something unique and impactful, it’s worth trying.

The tour moves along at quite a pace, and I found it more fun to explore the prison during an overnight stay. Tours run every hour in different languages. Meals are available until 19.00 at budget-friendly prices. Spending the night in a former military prison is a very unique experience.

The prison and the city tell the story from the Russian Empire through to the present day. You can touch many items from the Soviet Union, and guides are available in RU/LT/LV. If you’re in the neighborhood, it’s definitely worth visiting.

We were staying nearby in a small group and decided to check out this unusual attraction. The history surprised us, especially how recently the prison closed. Our guide really got into the prison guard role, which added a lot to the tour and stories. Tours are in Latvian and English, and maybe other languages too. You can stay overnight for an extra authentic experience, with different levels of comfort, hahaha. Thanks for the history lesson 😀👍
