Kasbah Angour

The garden and pool were the nicest parts for us, lovely places to unwind, though there were lots of children around, so it may not suit anyone wanting a quiet pool. The rooms were nice too, but there was a bothersome bathroom smell. The mountain views are attractive, although we would have preferred staying in Ourika valley, where there are more places to go, including on foot. Service didn’t feel like four-star service. Most waiters spoke little English, didn’t greet guests or approach them, and seemed to focus on waiting for requests and clearing up. Food was our biggest disappointment, 3/10. Over three nights the menu was nearly the same, with three tagines and one couscous. The cooking was okay but not tasty, and there was no innovation. Meals felt rushed, like a cheap cruise ship or retirement home, and after dinner there was no reason to stay at the bar, so it was empty. Most guests were in bed by 9 at the latest. There isn’t much else to do besides the pool and eating or drinking. The hotel didn’t meet all our expectations, though the accommodation and outdoor spaces are nice. My suggestion would be to take inspiration from Kasbah Tamadot, Bistro el Arab in Marrakech, and Dar Baba in Essaouira, where local food gets a modern twist. That costs more, of course, but why not offer both a cheaper and a pricier menu?

The Angour suite had beautiful views, and our children loved the setting, which had a mix of couples and families on Easter holidays. We found it serene, with attentive service and scenery that made it easy to settle in and relax. There are lots of excellent, fairly easy treks nearby, and we recommend setting off from the Kasbah. The food was tasty, though a little pricey, and the unheated pool was too cold to use on a cloudy day. Still, we’d be back in a heartbeat. It was perfect from start to finish.

It’s about a 30-minute drive from Marrakech, making it a good base for relaxing or exploring the Atlas Mountains. The setting has lovely views of the peaks, and the architecture feels authentically Moroccan. People praise the spacious, beautifully decorated rooms, attentive service, and tasty cuisine.
