The mountain views are spectacular, and February was very quiet and peaceful, with snow melting from the peaks. Imlil is a great spot for trekking, with several trails, about a 1-2 hour drive from Marrakech. I've been told summer brings a lot of tourists and traffic.

Imlil is the gateway to Toubkal in the High Atlas, and the village is now 10x bigger than it was when I last visited 30 years ago. It's the starting point for a two day trek to Morocco and North Africa's highest mountain, with an overnight camp at base camp. There's plenty of accommodation and parking in Imlil, and getting here from Marrakech is much easier than it was 30 years ago. The 2023 earthquake hit the area, and many people are still living in tents.

The welcoming Berber people make sure you enjoy your time in Imlil. A visit to Morocco isn't complete without staying here. There are lovely walks to explore, and you can hire a guide. See the waterfalls and the panorama cafe on the col, sleep at 1850m and hike up to 4200m at Jebel / Mt Toubkal. Bring boots, a hat, a warm layer for breaks, a windproof, sun cream and a camera. Take a relaxed mindset, enjoy the landscape and immerse yourself in Berber culture.

Even if you don't hike or climb mountains, Imlil is a lovely place to relax, enjoy the mountain air, or take a pleasant walk. It's a busy but very friendly village, with fantastic views of the valley and mountains, and it was easily the highlight of my Moroccan holiday. I'd highly recommend taking a qualified guide, even for a short hike, as they can make the experience better.
